Coronavirus, il regalo di Peter Gabriel alla Penisola: "Donate all’Italia: amo le persone, la cultura, la storia, il cibo"

Il cantante ha lanciato l'iniziativa e una raccolta fondi, con due suoi rari filmati live messi online, per sostenere il nostro Paese: "L’Italia ci ha offerto lavoro, quando di lavoro non ce n’era, soprattutto nelle estati degli anni Settanta"

"Per quasi cinquant’anni ho amato l’Italia, le persone, la cultura, la storia, il cibo e, più recentemente, l’isola di Sardegna. L’Italia ci ha offerto lavoro, quando di lavoro non ce n’era, soprattutto nelle estati degli anni Settanta": comincia così il post di Peter Gabriel, mandato online sul suo profilo Instangram il giorno di Pasquetta, che dà il via a un'iniziativa benefica dell'ex Genesis per aiutare il nostro Paese, in piena emergenza coronavirus. Due concerti rari, messi online a disposizione degli utenti, e una richiesta di raccolta fondi da destinare alla Protezione Civile e alla Croce Rossa Italiana.

For almost fifty years I have loved Italy, the people, the culture, the food, the history and more recently the island of Sardinia. Italy offered us work when there was none, especially each summer in the 70s, gigs were always found and some of our best and most chaotic tour experiences were when we were driving ourselves all over the country for a hodge-bodge of brilliant gigs, from seaside discos to football pitches in the mountains. Both Genesis and my music found wonderful and passionate audiences that used to sing along with us throughout the gigs and whenever I was doing a live album I would always ask first whether it could be arranged in Italy. I speak some Italian – really badly, but enough for it to feel like our home from home. It really hit us hard as a family, to watch the daily reports of deaths and devastation that this brutal virus has brought. Ten years ago, I asked my daughter Anna (@eyedphotographs) to film the show that we were planning to play with an orchestra at the Arena di Verona, which is an extraordinary place in which to be able to perform. Although I was recovering from a cold and not quite hitting the notes as I wanted, Anna did a wonderful job with her collaborator Andrew Gaston, and a great team, in capturing a very special night. The films she made have not been seen by a wide enough audience. Now many of us are at home and isolated, so we wanted to make them available to anyone interested, on the Real World Vimeo channel with the sole request that you consider contributing to one of these organisations raising money to fight the virus: Italian Red Cross OR Civil Protection Department - link in bio If you prefer to donate some money more locally, then please do that instead. We are thinking of all our friends and fans and everybody who has been hit in one way or another by this virus in Italy and around the world. We are also worried we are not far behind you in the UK. "Dieci anni fa ho chiesto a mia figlia Anna di filmare lo show che avremmo fatto, insieme a un’orchestra, all’Arena di Verona, un posto magico nel quale poter suonare", continua il messaggio, "benché io mi stessi riprendendo da un brutto raffreddore e non potessi prendere le note così come avrei voluto, Anna e il suo collaboratore, Andrew Gaston, hanno fatto un lavoro eccellente. Il film che ha realizzato non è stato visto da un pubblico sufficientemente ampio. Ora, molta gente è a casa ed è sola e noi abbiamo voluto rendere questo film disponibile per chiunque sia interessato".

I due filmati sono, rispettivamente Scratch My Back e Taking the Pulse - Live in Verona, sono stati entrambi girati il 26 settembre 2010 a Verona e sono ora disponibili sul canale Vimeo dell'etichetta dell'artista, la Real World, "con la sola richiesta che tutti voi consideriate di donare qualcosa a due organizzazioni che stanno raccogliendo soldi per combattere il virus. Se preferite donare qualcosa ad organizzazioni locali, per favore fatelo".

"Ogni volta in cui ho lavorato a un album mi sono sempre chiesto se potessi arrangiarlo in Italia", prosegue il post di Gabriel, "parlo anche un po' di italiano, male, ma abbastanza da sentire l'Italia come una 'casa lontana da casa'. Ci ha colpito duramente, come famiglia, guardare i bollettini quotidiani delle morti e della devastazione che questo virus si sta portando appresso". Peter Gabriel dal 2003 è cittadino onorario di Arzachena, in provincia di Sassari, dove possiede una casa sul golfo di Cannigione. La Sardegna è da tempo il suo luogo del cuore, tanto che nel giugno 2002 si è sposato in Costa Smeralda con Meah Flynn.
