KABUL - According to former U.S. Special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. Forces withdrawal could have been worse than that. He publicly criticized president Biden for U.S. Forces chaotic withdrawal. Khalilzad in an interview with the CBS correspondent said, "I am not saying it was an orderly withdrawal. This was an ugly final phase that could have been a lot worse". He elaborated that the U.S. Forces withdrawal could have been worse than that: Kabul may have been destroyed and street to street fighting could have occurred.
Last week Khalilzad stepped down from his position as the U.S. Special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation. This 70-year old man said that the debate in the U.S. Government was not based on realities and facts of what happened. According to him, Doha peace agreement was like a package full of conditions, that included peace negotiations between taliban and former government of Afghanistan and an inclusive ceasefire, but president Biden decided to withdraw the U.S. Forces day to day, without any kind of precondition.
Khalilzad laid the blame for the peace talks failure at Ashraf Ghani's door. According to Khalilzad, Ghani did not want to share the power with the Taliban. He said that former government preferred the current situation to a diplomatic solution; when they realized that U.S. Forces were leaving Afghanistan, they could not realize the effects of war. They were not serious on a diplomatic solution. A lot of Afghans believe that Khalilzad accredited Taliban with this agreement.
